Artist Bio

Some would argue BEN BURNLEY is a perfectionist. But for BREAKING BENJAMIN’s singer, guitarist, and visionary, there is no other modus operandi for his craft. With that dedication, BURNLEY and his bandmates–guitarist AARON FINK, bassist MARK JAMES, and drummer CHAD SZELIGA–have built 2006’s meticulous, infectious hard rock milestone PHOBIA (Hollywood Records). Building on their trademark hard-charging rhythms, sharp hooks, and soaring vocals, PHOBIA marks BREAKING BENJAMIN’s third album.

For BURNLEY, who typically writes at least 10 songs to yield one, the arduous approach has helped BREAKING BENJAMIN elevate the bar in following up 2004’s explosive platinum-selling We Are Not Alone, which produced a pair of compelling #1 rock hits, “So Cold” and “Sooner Or Later.” “It’s a very time-consuming thing,” BEN admits of his efforts to top the band’s airwave favorites. “I’ll basically write a number of similar songs and cherry-pick the best pieces from all of them and make one.”

With PHOBIA, which confronts anxiety and fear through catharsis and breathtaking melodies, the fruits of BURNLEY’s conviction can first be heard on “The Diary of Jane” –the first single and video–just one in a number of ferocious and hook-injected offerings on the band’s third album. As muscular as it is accessible, “Jane” has the power to invade one’s headspace, and occupy it for days.

Yet BREAKING BENJAMIN’s namesake didn’t always think so highly of PHOBIA’s first single. “Ben is his biggest critic,” bassist MARK JAMES acknowledges. “He’ll write stuff that is undeniable. And everyone else knows it’s undeniable. But he’ll think it’s not good enough and he’ll go back to the drawing board. With ‘The Diary of Jane,’ he had three or four different options lyrically and melodically before we even entered the studio. He had all of these variations that he presented to [producer] David [Bendeth]. And as is the case nine out of ten times, it’s almost always his initial gut feeling that wins out.”

BURNLEY’s instincts have guided BREAKING BENJAMIN from the bars and clubs of Wilkes-Barre, PA to a platinum album certification, all in the course of five years. On the strength of the quartet’s first hit, “Polyamorous,” from its 2002 major label debut Saturate, the group’s alt-metal leanings–inspired by the likes of Tool, KoRN, and Nirvana–earned the band prompt recognition.

With the aforementioned radio darling We Are Not Alone (which also contained the memorable ballad “Rain”) the group aligned with producer David Bendeth to forge a partnership that only grew stronger by the time work on PHOBIA commenced in early 2006. “We knew what to expect,” BURNLEY says. “We knew what he’d want out of us and knew what we’d want out of him.”

“Mark, Chad, Aaron, and Ben gave this record everything they had, worked their asses off and never settled for second best,” David Bendeth says proudly of BREAKING BENJAMIN’s new material. “The melodies are strong and memorable and we all feel it is a lot stronger than anything they’ve ever done. I worked BEN hard and he pushed himself. He has such a great instinct for lyrics and melody. He really knows what he wants and he never ceases to amaze me. He has a natural talent, a gift.”

That gift is evident in “Evil Angel.” which has a vibe akin to Alice in Chains, replete with AARON’s expressive, thunderous riffs giving way to a newfound rootsy, organic approach. Elsewhere, “You” finds the band operating in a rarely-used standard tuning, and relying on the highly capable rhythmic wares of MARK and drummer CHAD–who only recently joined the group but is an obvious ideal fit. “It was back to basics for us,” MARK says of the latter. “It’s so direct, more simple than usual. It’s definitely more of a feel than anything else propelling that song.”

The sonic epic “Dance With The Devil” also stands out as AARON’s fluid, forceful guitar lines and monumental drumming ideally interface with the power and range of BURNLEY’s voice. And despite his heartfelt delivery of lines like “I believe in you/I can show you that,” Ben pauses when it comes to talk about his deeply personal verse.

“I want the listener to analyze my songs,” he says. “I don’t want to do it myself. If someone thinks the song is about something and I come along and say, ‘No. The song is about this.’ I could ruin it for them.”

One thing that won’t be damaged at this point is the infrastructure of this band, helped by a newfound openness. “One thing in the past that affected us in a negative way was that we didn’t always speak our minds,” MARK says. “We’d keep stuff bottled up. And then maybe we’d feel regret or resentment. This time around, we made a point to say what we’re feeling.”

Finding a balance between enjoyment and ambition, BURNLEY thrives by challenging himself on PHOBIA. “I’m doing things vocally that I haven’t done before and we’re using different time signatures and tunings that are new for us,” he says. “I look at evolution this way: Every time you write a song, it’s one less thing that you can do. Of course there is always pressure to at least match what you’ve done before, but there is nothing I can do about it other than write the best possible songs I can.”

“I’m really proud of these songs,” MARK says. “BEN has done a fantastic job providing great hooks and phrases. I feel very strongly about every track on this record, which isn’t something I was always able to say. I think we really tried to approach every song by never trying to overstate an idea. If there was a catchy riff that AARON was doing, I never wanted to step on it. I’d try to seek a different way around it.”

Thinking outside the box, the men of BREAKING BENJAMIN have faced down their fears, put their hearts and their heads together to woodshed PHOBIA. Regardless of whether you’re afraid of heights, snakes, bees, air travel or whatever, this stellar song-cycle pays big dividends. Summing up BREAKING BENJAMIN’s new album, the band’s bassist concludes, “The goal was to make a solid, mature and cohesive record.”

Mission accomplished. PHOBIA is a damn-near faultless rock album.

I first heard BB in a friend’s CD player. When I asked him who it was, he said “only the best local band, they’ll be big some day” It was a live recording of their songs from the Saturate album from ‘the Staircase’ in Pittston, PA. It is still to this day my absolute FAVORITE CD. They should sell it, they’d make a fortune. Ben, you never let us down! Thanks for the great memories.

Breaking Benjamin is my LIFE. I listen to you everyday. My mom gets sick of hearing me talk about you guys nonstop :P I went to see you for the very first time March 7th, 2008 in Greensboro, NC and OMG I was about 20 ft from the stage and I was just completely blown away! Ben you are so freaking HOT! Like in your first Cage Rattle interview “tell Ben he’s hot” and you were like Get outta here! haha but it’s so true. Happy late birthday Benjamin I left you a comment on Shallowbay wishing you a happy birthday and on your myspace. I really hope I get the chance to see you live again and maybe meet you, (meeting you is MY LIFE GOAL) I will try very hard to. I hope you guys head to the studio, not saying I’m sick of this music because it’s amazing, best shit I’ve ever heard. I’m just eager to know what more Brilliant stuff you all will come up with. I know I will love anything you make. I just bought the concert DVD, it ended up being the Edited version which sucks because Ben’s hot cussing is edited out. So I am getting the UNedited version. Haha you do cuss a lot Benjamin but it’s HOT! I loved how at the concert I went to you said “the good times have just begun” & you talked about your love for video games (which I find adorable!) well okay this is long I know but I just love you guys. I don’t know what I would do if the band ever broke up, there just be no reason to live! well I can’t wait to heard what you come up with next! & whatever is sickness is still going on with you Benjamin, take care. Don’t push yourself too hard. Your music speaks to me and sounds like heaven. I will never go a day without hearing it. & I am very determined to go to another concert on your next tour, whenever that may be. Keep tocking guys. You are an inspiration to ALL (:
    I love you BENJAMIN!

Just saw these guys live with Three Days Grace, Seether, and Neverset. I love their music and find it very easy to identify with their lyrics. They put on a great show with my only complaint being that their set wasn’t long enough, but I didn’t think anyone’s was that night. Keep up the great music, I’ll be listening!

  36. Jayy on April 23rd, 2008 6:36 am

Saw these guys with Seether, Three Days Grace, and Hurt. I enjoyed the show so much, especially Ben with the water bottles. I loved them live. They really are a great band, right out of PA. I didn’t think they would be that great live but they really were, Ben’s voice still sounded awesome, unique, and perfect. I’m a big fan of them, always have been, this performance just made it even better. :]

Thanks to this I had a wonderful vision of Ben limboing in the shower, lol.

    Oh that’s funny.

  41. Claudine on May 8th, 2008 7:31 am

Okay, let me start with, We are not alone, reason being. It was the first CD I bought. The first time I heard them on the radio was at the gym. The owner of the gym had this little radio he would keep on country all the time, but when my husband and I would come in he let us change it to what ever we wanted. So we put it on 105.7. And there it was. So Cold, was playing. I got the best workout during that song. We cranked it and everyone was busting ass in that gym. From that point on I was a fan. I ran out and bought the CD. Of course it did’nt end there. I had to have thier first CD Saturate. But could not find it anywhere. So, my second CD was Phobia. This one was captivating, melodic and mesmerizeing. Every song, every lyric, every beat and cord could put you in another place. When I play these songs I feel inspired and energized. Even though the lyrics are dark and mysterious. It works, and not only does it work. It rocks! Well, I finally did find Saturate and omg! These people are brilliant. I can’t imagine what it would be like with out Breaking Benjamin. I listen to these 3 CD’s everyday. In my car, cleaning the house, laying out in the sun, at the gym. I’ve been to 6 shows and always in the front row. I will be a BB fan for life. I hope these 4 men continue to bring us amazing music for years to come.
    BB fan for life

Ive Been A Huge Fan OF Breaking Benjamin Since They Relesed “Were Not Alone Here” In 2004 .And Let Me Tell You No Other Band In The World Could Do Whatever It Is That Breaking Benjamin Does…Then They Came Out With Phobia In 2006 And That CD Was Untouchable. There Just The Best At What They Do….Nobody Can Hit Those Vocals Like Ben Can….He’s Got An Outstanding Voice For Rock Music. And Finally They Came Out with Saturate In 2007 And That Was My Favorite CD Yet……….Because Of The Way They Made Every Song A little Bit Different In Tone And Rythem…But I think There The Greatest Band To Walk This Very Planet We Call Earth!!

  55. Lee on March 10th, 2009 10:58 am

i was just listen to the to the interview with Ben a few months ago.. and I absolutely love the son “You Fight Me”! So cold is what got me hooked to the band but “You FightMe” is my favorite song and I can’t believe it was almost not put on the album. Ben Burnley has an absolutely beautiful mind, most deffently for music… Breaking Benjamin is my second favorite band and only because I have listen to KoRN since I was six. There music is like a medicine… it helps to know that your not the only one who feels what you feel… well anyways I love Breaking Benjamin and I can’t wait till album four… peace out.

    Always and Forever,
    Elizabeth (a.k.a. Lee)

Hmm…just reading up on the comments on here. Mainly out of boredom to be honest, there’s just too much to read lol. Anyways, I always feel stupid writing on these things, who’s to say that the band actually reads them theirselves. No offense to you guys, I love ya’ll awesome music. Ben is an awesome songwriter and singer. Well, you’re all awesome lol. I just feel weird writing on here, but I suppose I could always look at it like writing in my journal only people will actually read it. It’s so funny, I laugh at people that go crazy over bands and stuff but just to talk to ben and the guys would be like a dream come true for me. I love Ben’s writing and the music has been an inspiration in my writing. Thanks for putting out the great music guys.

  57. Laura Ashley on March 16th, 2009 7:05 am

  70. Fan since 2002 on August 22nd, 2009 7:37 am

I’ve been a fan of Breaking Benjamin for 7 years now. Although I liked them better 7 years ago they are still my favorite band and I HAVE punched a slipknot fan right in the face for calling Breaking Benjamin soft. Ben is one of the best vocalists I’ve heard, Aaron is a solid guitarist Mark-James is an excellent bassist (although he has recently become under-utilized but, earlier work shows his skill) and Chad is solid as well. I hope to see the following in Dear Agony:
Bringing back the Major tonality (breakdown, skin, simple design Polyamorous etc)
    More 12/8 time (evil angel)
More Alternative tunning (Until The End)
    Aggression (Believe)
    I EXPECT to see:
    Forceful yet melodic styling
    meaningful lyrics
    painstaking instrumental part writing
    the word F##k
    something new
